Why Is This Important?

The Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is the virus that causes the Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) and is an infection which progressively damages the immune system. When left untreated over time HIV infection can leave a person vulnerable to potentially deadly opportunistic infections, advancement to the most severe form of infection (i.e., AIDS or stage 3 HIV infection), or death. The global epidemic of HIV infection was first recognized in 1981^1^ and since then advances in diagnosis, prevention and treatment have made significant impacts in reducing the burden of HIV worldwide, including in the United States. Nonetheless, tens-of-thousands of new infections and hundreds-of-thousands of chronic infections continue to be reported each year, resulting in tens-of-billions of dollars in health care costs, demonstrates that HIV remains a significant public health problem in the United States^2-4^. With an average of 143 new HIV infections reported annually and over 3,000 new or chronic HIV infections reported in 2013^5^, HIV infection is also an important health issue in New Mexico.
